Chapter 36. Secret of the Wizard
Before the sun cleared the horizon, Promethus had harnessed Glinda's horses again and hitched them to the chariot. He carried two precious treasures with himâneither of which would make Glinda trust him ever again. The one was the secret from her lockbox that she worked so hard to keep hidden. The other was Ola Griffin, who sat beside him in the chariot.
Promethus took the reins in his hands and stepped into the chariot. As he lifted the reins to snap them, he saw a small shadow out of the corner of his eye. He paused and turned his head.
A young teenage girl, Eyve, looked up at him. "I saw Lady Glinda leave last night with the Fighting Girls. Now you are leaving. When are you coming back?"
"Child, what business is that of yours?"
"I want to join the Fighting Girls. I have what it takes. The soldier told me so."
"Is that so?" Promethus turned impatiently toward the dark horizon ahead. "I suppose he gave you that flower on your ear, too?"
Eyve reached up and touched the blossom on her ear. Her eyes searched the older man's face for some hint of compassion or reason. It was not found there.
Then Ola Griffin reached out and placed her hand on his arm. He looked down at her earnest, innocent gaze. Promethus sighed and looked back at Eyve. "Child, there are very difficult circumstances right now. I do not know when the sorceress will return. I hope that all of them will return, but I cannot say for certain. War is a hungry beast that does not stop eating until it is satisfied."
"Can I come with you? I have a sword."
"If you can swing a sword, your place will be here. No land will be spared. I cannot take you, child. I have my responsibility. I wish you well, but I cannot help you." Promethus snapped the reins and headed northwest to find Glinda and her army.
Eyve watched them go. They were headed north and west, toward the border. If Glinda and her Fighting Girls were facing war, they would need all the help they could get. She rattled her sword in its scabbard on her back and then reached up and touched the flower tucked into her hair by her ear. They needed another soldier. They needed her.
* * * * *
Morning came as the sun rose heavy and glared down with disappointment at the borderlands. The sun had no reason to smile, and neither did Glinda. She dismissed the soldiers and ordered them privily to watch Kallyâshe was not to be trusted. Then Glinda stepped away to talk with the Wizard.
"Oscar, do you know what you have done? You have destroyed my faith in others. After I met you, everyone else, is just, plainly, everyone else. No matter how you protest, and how you decry, you are no excuse for ordinary. I'm sorry, but you couldn't be ordinary if your life depended on it.
"You embrace the shadows and spin your yarns to make people imagine that you are invisible, but you are not invisible.
